Subject: Baidarka "Foldbot"

My thoughts after reading all the ideas presented.

- the lacing would definitely be on the centre of the deck
- my intent is to apply it to a double so that is my focus.
The stem to the first hatch would have
permanent stitching. This would fit over the
upswept stem bulkhead like a glove.
- the including of the hatch frames in the skin came to
me the other day and I am glad to see some support
for this. I would probably attach the hatch frames
to the kayak frame after the skin was in place.
This is still an option that I am weighing.
- the portion between the hatches would have the lacing
- To get around the second hatch from the stem the lacing
would have to continue past the hatch around one
side to centre back of this hatch.
- the lacing then would continue to the top of the back
of the stern but not down.
- the rudder (on a double I understand it more of a
necessity though the Aluet did not think so) would
be sewn into the skin and have an internal "thing"
to allow slotting into the kayak frame for rigidity.
this could slide into the kayak frame from underneath
and the lacing would keep the slotted piece in place.
- the idea is that the frame would be pre assembled. then
the skin would be slipped on stem to stern with the
stern skin sliding up onto the kayak frame from the
keel up with the slot piece sliding into a matched slot.
The Lacing would then be either laced in place or
be already in place and only have to be tightened.
- oh I forgot. The velcro (I am open to a better sealing
such as the bag but I am having trouble getting a
good picture of this method) would be a loose seal
with the flap not ever taking the stress of
tightening. The lacing would take that load and
the flap would be a continuation of the skin with
the lacing eye pinching the overlap/return of the
skin to start the flap. All the skin including the
flap would have HYPALON water proofing. I see a rope
reinforcing between the eye and the pinched skin as a
further reinforcing for pulling tight the skin.
- I share the "concern" with water in the area under
the lacing and above the flap. The over flap is a
good idea to address this. this would give three
layers at the seam. The flap under the lacing, the
lacing and the flap over the lacing. I am not sure
all this is necessary but it is an idea to start
with.
- the ending would have a end flap that could have velcro
again to bring it forward under the lacing to cover
the hole at the end. (see alternative below)
- this ending is not perfected in my head yet. It would
need to be such that the kayak frame could slide
into the skin which would mean that the skin would
have to open up to accept the frame and allow the
stern to slide onto the frame. One idea is how I
completed that stitch on the permanent single
kayaks: at the start of the curve of the stern
bulkhead the stitches formed a cross coming along
the centre of the deck and also perpendicular across
the the width of the deck. Using this the skin could
be openned up and laced closed.

Well enough said!! any takers for flowers and tomatoes to be
thrown.
