For Sale (maybe) 5.8 meter Aleut baidarka

To baidarka list members:

I had some correspondence with Kirk Olsen recently where I talked
about my most recent boatbuilding project. What follows is an excerpt from
my message to him.

> ... BTW, I've been giving some thought to selling the 5.8 (baidarka).
>Any thoughts on what you think the >5.8 is worth? I'm not selling because
>I've abandoned baidarkas or canoes, nor have I fallen on hard times >--
>it's that I've recently started on a new boatbuilding"project-from-hell"
>(call it a "baidarka with a >thyroid problem"). Actually, I have been
>contemplating sailing-sharpie designs for some 8-9 years now. >Things
>have been good enough lately that I have decided to start building one
>(estimated construction time >is 5-7 years -- this was originally going to
>be a "retirement" project!). I've purchased plans for Bruce >Kirby's
>Norwalk Islands 31' (yes, that's correct, a 31 footer...part of the
>project includes a small >extension on my barn). At this point I want to
>turn over my other boat investments into this project. >Not only that but
>I need the room as well (I've got four kayaks/canoes & four outboard
>engines in my >barn plus one canoe -- a Grumman -- outside). I'm awash in

Sort of a fun problem to have. Seriously, I am interested in selling my
5.8 m baidarka which I built about two years ago. I don't have any idea
what the market value is but will entertain any and all suggestions and/or
offers. The baidarka is built of white cedar ribs reinforced with carbon
fiber. The gunwales and keelson are built of spruce. The chines are of
6061-t6 aluminum. WEST system epoxy was used to seal all woodwork as well
as the lashings. The covering is nylon with a two-part coating which gives
an opaque effect to the skin. The baidarka was built from the table of
offsets in Zimmerly's book "Qajaq" . If there is any interest or comments,
please send email to PRL@CHRISTA.UNH.EDU Thanks!
