Subject: Maine: Gathering clouds

Despite my best efforts it appears that I have managed to schedule the New
England Skin Boat Tribal Gathering during the few hours so far this year in
which a severe storm will be beating up the Maine coast. I did not
schedule a rain date due to the difficulty in arranging schedules for those
traveling any distance, so we really have no backup plan..
Things look pretty bleak weather wise for Saturday
morning and afternoon with heavy rain, 6-12 foot seas, and 20-30 knot
winds forecast during the passage of the remnants of Bertha. Rain alone
doesn't mean much to boatmen, but you won't see many of the locals at sea
during this sort of thing.

As with all storms of this type predictions may change to much better or much worse
during the next few hours, but the way things are right now I would
suggest that you not make the effort to attend. I intend to be there
since we may have a few stalwarts show up in any case, but I would guess that
the majority of those in the Baidarka historical Society and elsewhere who
were sent invitations offline will not be there, so the turnout may not
live up to your expectations.

The restaurant on the dock at the Park will be open if you do choose to
come, to have a cold one and a hot lunch. If you intended to be in the area
as part of a trip anyway, stop and see who else the storm blew in.

I regret if this causes any of you any inconvenience, and I am really
disappointed at this turn of bad luck. If there is any interest in
rescheduling for a mid September time frame, let me know.

Best regards,
Ron Franklin
