Subject: Re: Wood version of Dyson 21.65'?
Hi,
I am building a 19'6" double. ash ribs 3/8 square, soak them a few days,
steam them, bend them over your knee immediately to loosen them up and then
over a tight radius form and then clamp them onto the gunwales.
Diddle around with getting them right when you have time to walk back and
forth a thousand times adjusting fairness.
A windsor chair builder friend suggested hitting ornery spots with a heat
gun, getting them where you want them, holding them till cool, and they will
lock in place.
I have made up the design by combining features I wanted, I looked hard at
Dyson's designs, the two-person baidarkas in the book out of the canadian
museum of civilization on kayak building, and Ted Walshes two person baidarka.
I decided on placement of cockpits by measuring all the designs i had. The
stern cockpit is about .25 forward from stern and the front cockpit about.59
(the length of the boat) forward from stern.
I wanted a more stable boat for downwind sailing, so it is 28" wide at the
widest. The designs that I saw varied from 19'3" to 24 '
So far I just have the ribs in, getting ready for the keel and stringers
Let me know how yours goes,
Lori
