I don't know how Don Owens' device worked, but I had an idea of my own.
Build plywood bulkheads which you can insert and remove through the
hatch. Attach the bulkheads to two old bicycle rims, so that the boat
is in the centre. You then can put the whole lot on a table, with some
wedges either side to prevent it from rolling off, and when you want to
turn the boat you just grab the rims and do it. MTB steel rims should
be strong enough and easy to get off old clunkers. You can screw them
to your bulkheads through the spoke holes. The most difficult part
would probably be fixing the bulkheads to the frame so that it doesn't
get distorted and so they can be removed when you're done. This is
speculation, though. I haven't tried this.
