I have built and paddled the G. Dyson designed double (using aluminum and
nylon) and found it to be very stable and pleasantly swift. With 2 adults
and little load, it has no trouble staying ahead of most other boats on SF
bay. Although my boat was built "stock" from Dyson's plans with no
modification, Steve Kaspar has recently finished a narrower and slightly
modified version with less stability and possibly more speed. I recommend
the Dyson double as a mature working plan which produces a stable but
responsive double. On a recent camping trip, my double was loaded with 2
adults and 2 children + camping gear ala Nanook of the North. Even with
the boat loaded until the gunwales were within 2" of the waterline, it
rode nicely through swells and chop and delivered us safe and dry at our
destination.
