You asked about alternatives to canvas and the "Dyson" fabric. After
seeing many rotted canvas skinned boats in the Bay Area with just the
tight points under the keel wearing and rotting, I used the lighter
(11oz?) material provided by George and covered it with clear 2-part
polyurathane. Some have advocated adding powdered mica (ceramic/pottery
supply vendors), but I store my boat out of the sun and left it out.
After 2+ years of weekend use (ca. 25 trips) I am delighted with the
durability of this skin and finish despite dragging through mud and rocks
loaded with child (its a double) and camping gear. I strongly recommend
the perforated keel tube with drain plug to allow thourough rinsing with
fresh water after a trip. I don't know how this can be interpreted in a
wood-frame boat, but I'm sure someone will implement it.
