George Dyson has tubing in 20 ft lengths at better prices, plus all materials
and tools....

Hey, y'all!

In a recent post I mentioned having priced aluminum tubing several years ago.
I got curious and dug up a supplier and priced it again. The last time I
priced it must have been a lot longer ago than I remembered because the
prices are significantly higher (now that I think about it, it was probably
late '86 or early '87.) The following price quotations are from a company
called Tube Sales (800-545-5000.) The prices do not include shipping. The
stuff ain't cheap! The reference to Tube Sales is not an endorsement of or
promotion for the company. It is simply the first supplier that I came
across.

6061-T6 Tubing

Comes in 12 foot mill lengths (I assume that means more or less 12 feet.)

Outside Diameter Wall Thickness
0.035" 0.049 0.065

1.125" 3.28/ft 3.50/ft 3.93/ft

1.000" 2.88/ft 3.12/ft 3.40/ft

0.875" 2.78/ft 2.98/ft 3.28/ft

0.750" 2.62/ft 2.78/ft 3.04/ft

0.625" 2.66/ft 2.78/ft 3.04/ft

0.500" 2.38/ft 2.56/ft 2.76/ft

0.375" 2.34/ft 2.42/ft 2.52/ft

These US$ prices are based on the minimum quantity rate (I didn't inquire at
what point a price break is available for bulk purchasing since it didn't
seem a likely way for me to buy the tubing.)

I would be interested in hearing from others who have built one of George
Dyson's aluminum framed boats. I am curious how you splice the tubing since
it is not available in the long lengths required for stringers and gun'l's.
I can see that you could possibly splice it using a short length of the next
smaller size tubing inserted at the joint, but would the fit be tight enough
to hold by itself, or is some kind of glue/epoxy/tinning required to make the
joint permanent?

Another question I would have with regard to the aluminum framing is how well
it holds up to the corrosive effects of salt water. Is it necessary to seal
the frame members with some kind of lacquer, and if so, are the tubes coated
both internally and externally?

I haven't seen any really specific discussion of the construction of
this kind of boat frame in the newsgroup.

Just eyballing, mind you, but it looks like the tubing alone for frame of
this type would run you upwards of $600.00, which is not a lot less than it
is going to cost me to build a half dozen of the baidarkas described in
Wolfgang Brinck's book, Baidarka.
