On the advise of Todd S (also baidarka list subscriber) I just ordered
Ceconite, a light weight fabric used for planes. I will pick it up in two
days and the bill is about $45-50 for 6-7 yards. This may be low price as
I'm close to airplane heaven -- Boeing field.

The following is a snippet from Todd:

Ultralights and simple light aircraft use a fabic called Ceconite (or
similar) which is heat-shrinkable Dacron (actually Polyester - very low
stretch compared to nylon). It has a wonderful hand and is a delight to
work with on skin boats, it's biggest shortcoming being it's very light
weight [light wt about 2.3 oz, medium is 3.0 and heavy is 3.7]

It heat shrinks drum tight, but not so tight as to warp or distort your
frame. I've used it with water-based roofing elastomerics as a coating,
and once the roofing goo sets up it is quite durable.

I've known biadarka builders that use it in conjunction with some of the
more flexible epoxies (try system3 clearcoat ? from the Wooden Boat Shop
in Seattle) to make a durable and semi-transparent skin.
