To which I can only add: for the best family boat around, check out
umiaks. You can build one from about 13 to 30 feet out of just about any
materials available - and you'd still be a skin boat builder if that's
important to you.
Oddly enough, we just published a book on the subject, but that
doesn't make the above any less true. Lots of boat for the money and time...
