Arline,
Last year I bought Wolfgang Brinck's book, "The Aleutian Kayak." That
combined with some questions to this mail list and answers from Wolfgang
(he's on the list) and other experienced builders, gave me all the info I
needed.
My prior experience was as yours, I had built a stitch & glue kit and yearned
for more. I am now satisfied. I have built a baidarka using traditional
methods and materials (as much as was practical). The cost was well under
$300 probably closer to $200.
I'll tell you, I was really proud of my first kayak. But I was not really
ready for the feelings of accomplishment that came with completeing my
baidarka. I am thrilled, but I ramble on...
I bought about $125 worth of milled lumber for the gunwales stringers and
keelson. About $10 worth of twine to lash it all together, A couple of
dowels to peg things together, $50 worth of canvas, some house paint. Where
ever possible I used found wood (an old waterbed frame) and harvested willow
shoots from the riverbank.
The whole project took just under six monthe of spare time and again I'm
thrilled. I hope you decide to launch a new project.
good luck,
Pat
ps. if you are interested I have a photo of my baidarka on the web. Let me
know.
