I used this type of seam in a canvas skin-on-frame kayak from Clarkcraft
plans. It worked well. Instead of tacks, I used a staplegun with stainless
steel staples. Then half-round mahogany 1/2" or 3/4" wide over the seam,
screwed in with countersunk
s-s screws. Looks nice.
I think the main advantage in using two pieces of canvas is you can stretch
them by hand. If you use one piece, you need to use traditional tightening
methods (loops sewn into the canvas & thin, strong rope to tighten it up) to
avoid wrinkles. Some may see the traditional method as better, of course. .
