Ross, the Book isn't specific about this, but if you examine the pictures
toward the end of the book where the baidarka has the skin pulled open
for repairs, you can see that the lacing is left intact beneath the skin.
It is also just barely apparent in the photo of the translucent skinned
baidarka on the cover of the book. I wondered about this when I figured
out that the lacing stays behind, and came up with three theories on why
this is so: because it helps to share bearing the strain of the taut skin
with the sewn seam; because it provides a tensile support beneath the
skin of the deck to help bear the load of things lashed to the deck and
of breaking waves; and (most likely) because it is easier to leave it in
place than to try to remove it.
What kind of string/thread/twine did you use for your stitching? Got any
helpful hints on the sewing/skinning process?
