Subject: miniscule progress
And now, back by popular (OK, one person) request:
Had a few free minutes today (which is now actually about 2 weeks ago) and
lashed the bow and stern plate halves together. I noticed that the tip of
one of the dowels holding the bow plate was visible at the surface of the
plate, ie will (wont it?) break out if stressed. I suppose something will
have to be done about that at some point. I should probably fix it before
it breaks out. It would be nice if I could back the dowel out maybe 1/4 inch.
I'm amazed at how strong the lashing seems to be. Simply amazed.
I may have unduly stressed the frame (ie dowel) getting it down by myself
from where it hangs on the shop wall by myself. It hangs about 15 feet high
along a wall above some other kayaks (stitch and glue) that are being
built. next time I'll be more careful getting it down, but its obvious I
1)made the dowel too long, which if you'll recall I was concerned about at
the time, or 2) drilled my dowel hole at a slightly bad angle, or both.
Anyway, not a big deal as long as I take care of it.
I'm only in town about 50% of the time for the rest of the summer/fall,
which is why I have only made sporadic progress. My goal of being on the
water in this boat by freezup is looking less likely.I hope to get in and
start on deck beams before I have to leave town again next week, and I'll
post if I do.
