Subject: getting started

Finally I was able to get some wood that may or may not work out for getting started. Picked up a spruce 2x8 and a hemlock 2x8, both have an occasional small knot and not the greatest grain, but they're the best Ive seen in far too many trips to every local lumberyard. At some point you just have to say, I'm going to try this piece of wood even though its really not that good. I only learn from mistakes, so let the mistakes begin!
Hopefully this week I'll start cutting and see what happens. If nothing else Ive got four good paddle blanks.

I dont think I'll be able to get gunnels from the spruce, so I'm hoping to get them from the hemlock and use the spruce for hull stringers and as much else as I can get out of it. Since hemlock is stronger than spruce, or so says my carpenter friend, I could I suppose make the gunnels smaller but the recommended size seems pretty small already so I dont think I'll bother. It will only save a few ounces anyway.

I'm looking forward to getting started so I will know what the hell you're all talking about here. My goal is to finish before freezeup.
