Platt Monfort designs lightweight canoes with a heat-shrink dacron skin
over a kevlar-cord reinforced wood frame. I'm guessing he would pretty
much be an expert on using dacron as a boat skin. He sells 72" width
dacron fabric for $6 per yard, and from the pictures I've seen, his boats
can be finished with a beautiful translucent look to them when finished
with varnish. His boats have the skin attached with adhesive, so asking
him about sewing the fabric would be a good idea. He sells the durability
of the fabric, but I don't know how strong it really is. If someone wants
to reach him to ask him these questions, he is:

Disclaimer: I am as much an expert at building his geodesic canoes
as I am at building baidarkas (meaning I have never built either one
(yet)). I had gone far enough to get a set of his plans before thinking
about baidarkas, though, so I have some information in front of me.
