Came today. 60" wide roll of white 1000 denier Cordura(r) nylon 10 yards
long.

Comparing it to some cloth swatches from Dyson, Baidarka & Company (#466 -
13-oz polyester; #463 - 14.2-oz nylon, oxford weave; and #462 - 26-oz nylon,
double weave) it most resembles the 13-oz polyester cloth, only significantly
thinner -- it feels roughly 2/3 as thick as the polyester.
I hope it will be heavy enough.
The donor claims that it is on the order of 5 to 10 times stronger than
cotton (depending on the cotton, I guess), so I guess it will have sufficient
tensile strength for a boat; however, I wonder about it's ability to
withstand abrasion. I think that I would feel more comfortable using the
heavier fabric from George Dyson; however, this was free material and I am
grateful for it. I'll just have to test it in very controlled conditions
until I have an idea of its limits. I am leaning toward hypalon for a
coating, so that may act as a sacrificial layer for the skin. It is
translucent enough to read large print (1/4" letters) through if you hold it
tightly up to a magazine or book.

The backing seems to be more of a sizing than a backing material. The cloth
and backing can't be blown through by holding it to the lips and blowing.

I think that there are heavier weights of Cordura(r) on the market, perhaps
the "ballistic" nylon? Also, I don't know what the retail price for this
material would be since this was completely gratis.
