Has anyone built a wide flat bottomed, flared sides Baffin style kayak?
Looks like a great boat for fishing from. I have built two
canvas-covered kayaks one is a W.Greenland type 20" x 17' and a replica
of the 1934 Aleut Ikyak 20.4" x 17' they both have about 18 degrees of
Vee so they lean readily. I would not call them tippy but the Greenland
boat is twitchy, especially at rest in flat water, the Aleut is quite a
bit more stable in all conditions due to the multi-chines and a fuller
hull. Now that I have built and used my narrow kayaks the next boat will
be a wider deeper hull. Why? Well for fishing from it is nice having a
boat that is just more stable like when you are trying to save your lure
from the mouth of a dogfish. For camping out of you should build a deep
kayak so that there is 9" or more from the underside of the backrest to
the rib below it. You can make a day tripper out of touring boat but it
is not very good the other way around! Always learning, Tom
