I would call that portside forward. Am I missing something? Is there a
hidden joke that is the major problem?

Otherwise, I would just say, "Ma'am, I need a square yard of #10 canvas,
please," and avoid getting involved in a technical discussion. (Assuming the
material is canvas.)

Of course, if she is really cute and you want to impress her, you might tell
her the story about how you fought off that great white shark that holed your
boat while you were making solo a North Sea crossing during the storm of the
century to blockade Norwegian whalers and Russian nuclear subs for Green
Peace and would you like to come up to my apartment and look at my copy of
QAJAQ...... }:->
