Hi
In the Canadian Museum on Civilization book Inuit kayaks in Canada. They
mention severial tribes which used there kayaks as Catamarans to cross rivers
and lakes. There is no description of how this was acomplished but most of
the kayaks used were flat decked ie. Greenland and coper kayaks.
I have been using a greenland kayak 3 or 4 times a week made with #10 canvas
( not 10 oz ). I abuse this boat and have had no problems.
However if you are looking for the chepest and lightest Kayak 1/4" luan
plywood ( the stuff that sels for $10 a sheet or less ) on 3/4" stringers
covered with enamal is the chepest you can make. This is how I and a few
frends have started and there much easer. The down side is that triditional
kayaks are better. If you are intrested in a greenland Kayak Sea Kayaker has
two articles you can order from them for $3 each ( the Greenland Kayak I use
) It makes a great Kayak. Wolfgangs Kayak endsup lighter but has more parts
( He is also a nice guy and can do amazing things with his boats ).
I would strongly recomend both of those and Wood and Canvas Kayak Building by
Gorge Putz ( this book has a wider beam boat than either of the above ).
There is a Mark Savon some where out there who is working on a folding
Greenland Kayak, I think he is on this net ( since he gave me the address )
and may be able to help with a folding Kayak.
I hope there was some help in here some where.
