It makes me smile to get at least a small vote of confidence...hey
guys, don't write off the cultural interpretations! Even H.C.
Petersen in his Skinboats book notices the existence of "cult boats"
with a specific shape to designate a particular social standing of the
paddler (p. 51). I marvel at the complex constellation of social and
practical issues bound up in these wonderful boats.

I also find the engineering explanations equally fascinating, so I'm
just gonna keep reading....

This probably explains much behind the Business title
Laughing Loon Kayaks by Rob Macks who makes a cool wood strip
baidarka. No wonder Canada has such claim to this mystical bird
of the waters.
