Hi, Ross!

Coupla things for you, first things first. You could have done a
launch from up on the beach the first time. Just put the paddle
alongside or on the foredeck, and use your two hands to lift and
drop forward as you sit in the kayak. On a beach (I assume you're
talking sand here), this works well. It'll leave a track somewhat
similar to that of a sea turtle by the time you reach the water.

Also, you CAN stand in a canoe. When you pole, you have to stand.
I've seen numerous illustrations of this, and there are members
on this list that have done it, but I've never actually done it.
I have, however, stood up in a canoe and cast while fishing. No
problem, so long as you keep your movements steady and over the
keel line.

You can also stand in a kayak, but I don't know anyone who has
actually done it, other than on a dare.

Neoprene booties should work OK. You can get these to varying
thickness and sizes, which might allow for a Polyprolene (sp?)
sock inside it for additional warmth.
