One thing you might try to improve the entry technique described above:
Don't let go of the paddle. Putting it on the deck or alongside the
cockpit risks losing it if you have any kind of surf at all. Instead,
use it in one hand held straight up to do the pushing on one side, and
your fist on the other side to *turtle track* your way into the water.
