Subject: Re:[baidarka] adjusting to create more volume
I'm a first time builder, making a greenland style kayak (wood and canvas)
according to Bob Boucher's video and taking hints from Wolfgang Brinck's
book. I had to shave 5 inches off the 16 foot gunnels due to a soft end that
I didn't think would be a problem ('till I got it home)and I widened the
midpoint to 20.5 inches. I'm a 210 lb. paddler and I will be using the boat
to haul my carcass and 40lbs. of gear to the BWCAW. I'm lining up the keel
(one piece) to attach to bow and stern and I'm wondering about the depth...
The plans call for an approximately 6.75 inch rise on the bow, 5.5 at the
midpoint and about 5 at the stern. I don't want to go too deep and have an
unstable boat, nor too shallow and be wallowing to the point of swamping.
Any suggestions?
thanks
