Sure, you can use it, but it's quite heavy compared to spruce or most
pine species. As I understand it, there are several types of
"mahogany", some having much more decay resistance than the others.

I'm building my first skin on frame kayak from the design provided in
Brinck's book "The Aleutian Kayak". Originally I planned on doing the
idealistic approach and build the boat primarilly out of Spruce. Yeah,
right. Not a sliver to be found. I am settling for pine. At least for
now.

My question: In all my research I have not heard anyone mention
Mahogany!! It is the wood of choice for strip builders. (And is
available in my area.) Why not skin kayaks? Has anyone ever tried it?
