Bill,
I like the photos of your translucent skin baidarka and Greenland. My
question is how do you keep them so light.
My Greenland weighs 35 lbs (to me that's light!), has spruce gunnels
7/8" x 3+" and oak ribs- built according to Chris Cunningham's article
in Sea Kayaker. The skin is 12 oz nylon coated with Hypalon. As I
recall, the frame weighed 25 lbs and the skin added another 10 lbs.
How do you keep yours at 25 lbs?
I started a baidarka and plan to follow Wolfgang's scantlings using
spruce, and probably the same skin as my Greenland boat. I would be
happy with 35 lbs, but I would like to know how you make yours 10 lbs
lighter. What kind of wood did you use? Steam-bent or willow frames?
Did you go lighter on the scantlings?
Thanks,
Rick Rubio

The picture you saw is a baidarka that has a retractable skeg, forward
cargo hatch, removable seat, shelving, & footrests and weighs about 37
pounds. Kind of heavy compared to the Greenland boats I have been making
lately. They weigh in at about 25 pounds.
The baidarka is 17' 1" x 22" x 8.5"
