Most of the descriptions and photos I've seen seem to indicate a
seated position, but now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen
a clear statement to the effect that "these boats were paddled seated" or
vice versa.
On page 7 of Zimmerly's "Hooper Bay Kayak Construction" there is a
picture of Aloysious Hale setting a net for tom cod, in which he looks to be
kneeling, but it might have to do with setting the net, rather than
paddling. On p. 91 Dr Z has a picture of a load of white kids demonstrating
passenger carrying for short trips across streams. The paddler is seated
there, and one imagines the good Doctor would insure that pictural details
were accurate. In Qajaq, p. 39 I would say the paddler was definitly seated.
The only kayaks from that (general)area that I know were paddled
kneeling were the Alutiqq (spelling??) boats from mainland SE Alaska.
