This may well be due to different moist absorption from innner fiber and
external "waxed" coat. Wooden surfaces do the same: I omitted to treat
the bottom surface of a table 4*4 ft years ago, and the different
swelling ratio between bottom and top surfaces caused much cracking,
until I was advised by a professional cabinet maker to treat the same
the two surfaces.
Craig, wasn't it on your pages that you had extensive bamboo info
sources ?? If not I'll check back on my stuff and retrieve it for this
bamboo thread.
