Subject: [baidarka] Design for a "river" baidarka?? & How to cartop a skin boat?
Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 09:53:54 -0500
I'm nearly finished with my first skin boat(an adaptation of the
"Rob Roy" kayak/decked canoe), and would like to build a baidarka as my
next boat. However, I'm wondering about some design specifics...I will
be using these boats primarily on medium/large rivers(with a few small
rapids), NOT on lakes, oceans etc. Concerning the tailpiece on the
traditional baidarka....as I understand it, this was developed to "push"
the boat in following seas.....wouldn't this tend to make the baidarka
harder to control when paddled on rivers, with their constant currents?
Has anyone had experience with this, and can you comment?
Also, how do you carry your skin boat on a cartop? How do you
avoid "creasing" the skin where the boat rests on the crossbars? Any
suggestions here?
Thanks in advance!
