Subject: [baidarka] Gunwale height
Greetings from a new list member!
I have started collecting materials for my baidarka a la Wolfgang Brinck's
book. After a long (lonnnng) search, I finally found a clear 16 foot board
of white pine for my gunwales and stringers. Problem is that most lumber
yards in my region cut down the boards to 8 footers, 14 feet being about
maximum. "Not much demand for anything that long" or "Our ceilings are
only 14 feet high" have been the common excuses.
Anyways, back to my main concern. I have been going over the old posts in
the archives in my spare time and came across a posting to "New Builders"
from Wolfgang Brinck back in Oct. 1996. In it he says to "...stay away
from some of the softer woods like white pine when choosing gunwale
materials...if you do so with a softer wood...increase the height of the
gunwales." Yikes! As I will be using the white pine, what do you
recommend that I should increase the gunwale height to, over that of the
original dimension of 1.750 inches, to maintain proper stiffness?
