Subject: [baidarka] Messabout in Betterton
Hi all --
just a reminder to paddlers and other cartopper sorts. This is a completely
informal get-together which more or less starts Friday afternoon, continues
Saturday, and ends sometime Sunday in the early evening.
---
First Sassafras Messabout:
Friday July 24 to Sunday July 26. Nominal start: any time after noon on Friday. Nominal end: sometime Sunday.
What It Is:
People who have built their own small boats get together and picnic and sail and row, etc. Of course you are welcome if you have any kind of kayak, skiff, dinghy, canoe, proa, what have you -- as long as you enjoy Messing About.
Location: ---------
Betterton MD
Simplified Directions: ----------------------
from the south -- US 301 to MD 213 North then follow the signs to Still Pond and Betterton from the north -- US 301 to MD 290 West to 213 south in Galena, and then follow the signs
Our Rendezvous Point & Sponsor: -------------------------------
Dublin Dock Restaurant & Pub 410-348-5896, in Betterton right above the beach
The Quick Schedule: -------------------
There isn't one, it's a Messabout! Actually, I will make a point of being at the restaurant at Noon on Friday for any early arrivals with questions. After that on Friday afternoon I will probably be on the water. In other words, come anytime on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Betterton has a nice County Beach and a number of free transient slips for anyone who plans to sleep aboard. Plenty of parking. Places to grill hamburgers and such, and a large Picnic Pavilion on the hill above the beach.
There is a bath house with showers and lavatory facilities. There is a B&B in Betterton proper (Lantern Inn, 800-499-7265). There is a general store and gas station about 3 miles from Betterton, in Still Pond. The Big City, Chestertown, is about 10 miles away and has all the usual stuff (but no Wal-Mart), including a Comfort Inn hotel.
More Info: ---------
I'll post some more boating-related info when I have the time to put it together. The question of camping in tents is still unresolved and I hope to have some more about it soon.
Sailing Directions: -------------------
-- Georgetown, with several marinas, is about 8 miles east up the Sassafras from Betterton if you want to launch there and cruise down the river. It's very nice country.
-- Turner's Creek, a nice spot & sheltered anchorage, is 4 miles up the Sassafras.
-- Still Pond, another sheltered anchorage, is 5 miles south Betterton.
-- Lloyd's Creek is a remote spot (can't get there by road) 2 miles east of Betterton.
-- Elk Neck State Park (Turkey Point) is about 8 miles NNE of Betterton.
-- Grove Point is 1.5 miles NE of Betterton and is "the other side" of mouth of the Sassafras.
A Nautical Chart: -----------------
I'll post a JPEG scan of the chart on my Cheap Pages for people who want to take a look and/or download it.
