Subject: [baidarka] Spar Varnish On Canvas
I have been experimenting on strips of #10 canvas duck with a variety of
finishes, and I would like to thank those who helped by providing me with
information. By far the best finish I found so far was with spar varnish.
The first coat was two parts spar, two parts linseed oil and one part
turpentine. Then following coats were with straight spar. It is very strong,
dries quickly, is very flexible and is translucent. It's not leveling out as
fast as I want, and right now I am trying follow up coats of spar with 10%
linseed oil to see if it speeds up the leveling.
Has anyone else tried anything similar, and if so, how did it hold up over
time?
