Matt Broze wrote an article in the SeaKayaker Magazine:

Paddles, Design features discussed, "A Quest for the Perfect Paddle," Matt
Broze, Spring 1992, page 39

Not really a hydrodynamic study but quite interesting. Maybe you'll find
somethig there.
