Subject: [baidarka] Coating the Skin
Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 16:56:36 -0700
Hi Fellow Adherents!
The Dacron skin is on the frame! It's been stitched! It's been ironed, and
is drum-tight!
Now what?
I can either go with Hypalon, which comes in few colours, or go with
something else....
I was thinking of using a product by Flecto Coatings called "Outdoor Diamond
Finish"; this will give the translucent look. It's a waterborne
"Varathane". It does say it isn't for below the waterline applications, but
what do they know? (I plan to phone them tomorrow to find out).
Maybe I'm some kind of weird hold-out, but I'd like to find my coating
material locally, so I can get help if I need it. The Aliphatic Urethane
sounds great, but no one around here knows what I'm talking about, unless
it's a vehicle paint.
Can someone give me some definitive direction? I'd like to use Canadian
stuff if possible, just for ease of access.
The several paint and coating companies I've contacted by e-mail have been
noteworthy in their lack of response. The only reply I did get was from a
General Paint chemist who suggested I not use Modco's Acrylic Latex
Elastomeric Deck Coating as it is breathable.
Responses eagerly awaited and gratefully accepted!
