Hi Douglas,
Fancy meeting you here....(grin).
Just to be socialable, and to show how little I really know - some folks
I know use canvas waterproofed with thinned oil paints. Others use
Ceconite (there it is again), waterproofed with spar varnish (and
then painted if you want color). Can't comment on durability or
what is best - I'm sure either will last "long enough".
For the record - I'm going to be teaching a class on building skin
kayaks in about a year. We're going to do a Greenland-style from
plans out of Adney's book - got the plans from the Smithsonian, and
I'm going to change them a bit. Construction is going to be the
cheap-n-easy way. Plywood frames with pine(?) stringers and
ceconite covering. The goal is fairly quick construction, very light
weight, and common materials. I have two students, both women, already
committed, and they really like the idea of being able to single=-handed
load it on a car.
BTW - I'm not sending to the whole list because I really don't know
what I'm talking about...;-)
Cheers again,
Dan
