I worked as a sawyer in a sawmill for years but I have never split
lumber by hand. I have cut firewood all my life though and a short
piece of firewood can be next to impossible to split sometimes if there
are lots of knots. Just imagine how easy it would beto split a log 16'
long!
If you need fairly clear lumber you won't find it in a tree with
branches near the base. If knots are not a problem you could saw it up
with a chainsaw mill or large bandsaw and salvage a fair bit of lumber
from it.
