I just received a sample PVC impregnated fabric that another member of
this list used on his kayak. I was pleased to find out how durable it
seems. The PVC is impregnated into the fabric so that it could not
delaminate. I tried to scratch it with sharp rocks and sticks. The
sharp wood barely makes an impression on the surface. After a while the
sharp rock began to scratch the surface of pvc making it somewhat rough
in texure but in no way affecting the strength or waterproofing of the
fabric. Next I tried to rip the fabric where it had been cut with a
sharp knife. The hole would not tear any larger with all the muscle I
put into trying. The fabric is used in awnings, tents and truck tarps
as a replacement for canvas. The cost is only slightly more than canvas
and you don't have to fool around with toxic fumes applying coatings. I
will be using it on my next boat.
