Yes contact cement works well. I have built 3 folding kayaks using
canvas cemented to plywood panels. It is waterproof, very strong and
repairs are easy. I even glued to pieces of canvas together to form the
hull on one boat because I did not have a single piece big enough. The
seam is on the bottom where it could cause trouble if it came apart. No
sign of the seam separating or leaking yet. I understand contact cement
also contains urethane rubber.
