When my friend Rob and I were building several Baidarkas for the movie
"Alaska", we had two of Bruce Lemon's boats. The double seemed to trim
bow low with a 200 lb load in the forward cockpit. When we asked Fraser
Heston about it he said that Bruce had built the boat to paddle with his
dog in the hole. Second hand info, but the video he has done has some
shots of a dog in the boat. Try contacting him for some pointers. There
was an interesting article done in a recent issue of Wooden Boat
magazine about a boat being built under his instruction.
As for the dog re-entering the boat, if you jam a paddle under the deck
lines so that the blade is in the water it slows the roll of the boat
incredibly. Not a pontoon...a motion dampener. This combined with your
own dynamic balancing while braced in the boat might be sufficiant to
counter the shifting ballast of a dog scrambling in & turning around
three times before laying down. I was shown this technique by a
gentleman from Greenland who dropped by my shop the day I was launching
a West Greenland pattern boat. I tried it and can do a wet re-entry
without a paddle float.

Hi,
I haven't been working on the kayak much lately. I have more time and
inclination to get back at it. Especially, after seeing the exhibit
"Qajaq"
at the local museum. I have a rather odd question for the list.
Has anyone modified one to accommodate a dog? Specifically, a bird dog
that
would need to be able to exit and enter. Some people put a little
'deck' on
their canoes for the dogs to climb up and in. Any neat ideas?
Thanks,
DrDuktayp
Glad to be back :)
