All I can say is that it's to Starkell's credit that he described his experiences
as honestly as he did given the ill prepared and ill equipped nature of his trip.
Of course, if he'd have known what he was doing then it wouldn't have been nearly
the adventure that it was and the book perhaps just a pleasant travelogue. If
Franklin had known what he was doing when he went to the arctic, I doubt that he
would have gotten nearly the press that he did.
Still, I admire Starkell's grit. So, hats off to him.
