Actually, people who worked in cotton mills wrecked their lungs quickly
enough. I suppose the mask is simply a recognition that a lot of
manufactured materials have a dark side, not that canvas per se is going to
do you in. It may not "make sense" but certainly in the case of protecting
employees in the workplace, it makes a certain amount of sense to me, just
like hearing protection does.
