Right, there are "junipers" and "junipers".

Western Red Cedar can be used for boats (I think Haidas or others used it
for dugouts) but it's really related to redwood. Etc., etc. I use W. Red
Cedar poles for small spars since they are sold int he lumber yard as
"baluster".

We have a LOT of red cedar round here in Maryland. You could probably use
it for small spars as long as you kept 'em thick. I make cleats from it;
works nice for that. I'm, sure that someone somewhere used red cedar in a
skiff or small boat since, after all, you use what's cheap, free, or
available.
