Getcher Flowering Dogwood!
Get it while it lasts!
There's a blight killing off dogwood trees - it's certainly prevalent in
Maryland, I don't konw about elsewhere.
Here's a good chance to get some hard, fine-grained a wood. Dogwood's very
nice that way, but since dogwoods are normally so small you don't see
"dogwood lumber". A use I see frequently in books is "shuttles for weaving
machines".
Makes good cleat stock <grin>. There are probably 20 dogwoods slowly
withering in our woods. The blight seems to affect the bark etc but not the
wood.
Also I've read in at elast one Chesapeakey type Foxfire type book that
dogwood was the preferred material for the "clubs" on the end of booms on
Chesapeake canoe and skiff sail rigs. "Hardest wood there is" said the old
waterman. (We know that's not strictly true but perhaps indeed the hardest
easily found around the Chesapeake).
