Economical Sitka Spruce is an extinct species. I'm building a second skin boat
from a construction grade spruce 2x10 that costs $30 for a 16 footer. There was
a great stack of boards at Barr Lumber in Costa Mesa, but unfortunately, Barr is
now Ganahl Lumber, and the quality is not as good. You might check other Ganahl
lumberyards periodically for acceptable boards. Look at the 2x10s or 2x12s,
since those boards come from bigger trees and will have fewer knots. Small
tight knots are nothing to be concerned about. Just watch out for spike knots,
the ones that go across the board.

You might also consider clear douglas fir. It's heavier, but the frame pieces
could be lightened accordingly if you don't mind the extra work. As an example,
I hollowed out the sides of my gunnels so that they resemble "I" beams. You can
do this easily on a table saw. Orange Coast Lumber in Santa Ana had a good
selection of clear douglas fir last time I checked.

A good baidarka doesn't have to be expensive.

Hello,
I've decided to build an aleutian kayak per Wolfgang Brink's book.
I'm now looking for wood. I want to use sitka spruce for most of the
frame because of its light weight and strength. And It's been suggested
to use green white oak for the ribs. The price for the frame peices
from Aircraft Spruce is about $450.--. I have cuecked a couple of lumber
yards in Washington and I get a price of about $200.-- plus shipping.
I live in Southern Ca, Redondo Beach. I checked with Spar Lumber in Long
Beach, Ca. and they don't have Spruce lumber to my specs right now so I'll
check back with them.
Does anybody know of an economical source for Sitka spruce in Southern Ca.?
