There is a wooden boat show in the Cedarville-Hessel area of eastern
Mackinac County in the UP every August. I'm almost certain it was last
weekend, but dont take my word for it. If it is this coming weekend and you
go, plan on camping. You wont find an open motel room within 50 miles. If
you cant find any info elsewhere call the Les Cheneaux Motel in Cedarville
at 906-484-2581, they can certainly tell you the date if noone else can.
I was in the area last month. Ran into an old fella named Archie Dunn who
had built a birchbark canoe, his first, for the museum in Cedarville. It
was small but interesting, and is in the museum now. he was looking for a
tree to build another one from. I meant to check in again a couple weeks
ago but didnt have time. If you're interested in that kind of thing you
might check in at the museum and ask about him. I think he was also
interested in having someone video the building of the next boat, if you or
anyone is really ambitious and have some time on your hands.
