The dowels are there in the original. I doubt the
museum put them there. They are fatter in the middle
and taper toward the ends. About 1/2 to 3/4 inch in
the middle, 3/8 toward the ends. I mounted them in
holes drilled through the gunwales. Since the dowels
are tapered, they won't slide out. Or if you're
worried, don't drill all the way throught the
gunwales.
My guess is that the dowels maintain gunwale
separation without the weight of a full deck beam.
