Subject: baidarka rib question

Hello all,
I'm building a 17' baidarka based mostly on Wolfgang Brinck's book. I'm
using 1/4 by 3/4 white oak for ribs, which are whittled down to insert
into the gunwales in a 1/4" drilled hole. I've installed about 7 ribs
and am having worries over this arrangement. 1/4" looks SO skinny to me.
Am I setting myself up for many broken (in use) ribs, or am I being
overly cautious? I am thinking about going back and mortising out those
holes in the gunwales to accept the full dimension of the rib stock, but
don't really want to if it is overkill.
Thanks,
