Actually, they paddled up the Minnesota River to Big Stone Lake, then up
the Little Minnesota, where they portaged over to Traverse Lake and the
Red River. (As a personal note, during my first year of life, I was a
resident of Browns Valley, Minnesota, which lies between Big Stone Lake
and Traverse Lake.)
