Well right now I'm lashing and slashing my way through skin boat #1 and
had that same question...While looking through The Skin Boats of Saint
Lawrence Island, Alaska by Stephen R. Braund I found several examples
where this was done on umiaks so I don't feel like too much of a radical
for shimming the ribs/stringers on my kayak. If I didn't it would be A)
a lumpy kayak or B) using a lot of oak in search of perfect ribs.
