The 3/8 inch diameter on a round rib is pretty much the lower bound.
Make them any thinner and you will have breakage when you use the
boat. I suspect the Bruce Lemon's boats have a little wider spacing
on the ribs, hence the stouter ribs. He also goes with three chine
stringers instead of four. If you're teaching classes, time is of the
essence and most people that teach classes figure out some way to
reduce total parts count so people can have a boat in 9 days.

They do even out some under pressure of the skin and sliding around
when in use, but within a limit. If the lines of the chine stringers
are off significantly, chances are they won't even out.
